If you don’t know what the Gosnell trial is, then you are part of the problem. And if you do, then you may be surprised to know that I do not see his grisly abortion practice, revealed through his murder trial, as a symbol of the barbarism that will destroy America. Rather, it is something simpler and yet more profound.
In polite circles, Kermit Gosnell, a physician in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is known as an abortionist. In more honest moments, those who have learned about his abortion practice might call him evil, a murderer, a barbarian, or other like term. He’s on trial for the murder of eight people, including seven newborns who were killed after being born alive following attempted abortions. Several employees have testified that the newborns’ spines were “snipped” with scissors; one described it as a “standard procedure” at the clinic. The testimony also revealed that Gosnell employed a teenager to administer anesthesia to women, kept jars of severed babies’ feet on a shelf in his office, and reused disposable medical supplies.
The trial in Pennsylvania has been going on for weeks and yet for weeks neither CBS, NBC, or ABC reported anything about the trial. It is great news, worthy of almost daily repetition, when U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin comments about abortion, rape, and his belief that God is the author of all life. Gosnell’s practices were not even worthy of a single mention.
There is a reason for the mainstream media’s silence. They are not stupid. They understand that if too many people read of Gosnell’s actions then more people might look more closely at abortion practices. They know that many who don’t think about abortion or don’t think of it as anything more than a surgical procedure will be confronted with what Roe v. Wade has unleashed on our country.
Mainstream media knows that, if informed, Americans might demand change. After all, even the liberal Pennsylvania legislature adopted more stringent abortion regulations once Pennsylvanians realized what was going on in their state.
What will destroy America is not abortion per se, but ignorance. But worse than ignorance is our apathy about it, the apparent unwillingness of too many Americans to search for and demand the truth, then act on it.
The loss of truth destroys everything else, particularly freedom. Thomas Jefferson said:
“I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education.”
By reference to “the people” Jefferson was not advocating a pure democracy. Rather he was saying that when we don’t know enough about what is going on, how our civil government is supposed to work, and how human beings are supposed to live as self-governing people under God1, then we will lose our freedom.
And that is exactly what has happened in America. We don’t know what is going on for the most part and, as demonstrated by the lack of coverage of the Gosnell trial, the liberal press is complicit in our ignorance. We allow our taxpayer financed journalism schools to teach what mainstream media does. No wonder those in the mainstream media think we are too stupid to govern ourselves. And maybe they are right at this point.
We have stupidly allowed ourselves to be governed by those who think we are uninformed and stupid. And for them, the solution is not a better-informed and educated citizenry but a civil government big enough to run our lives for us. As Jefferson also said, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”
Jesus put it another way. He said, ”If you continue in my word, then you are truly disciples of mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” But, by implication, the reverse is also true: if we ignore the word of God, we will not know the truth, and we will not be free.
Unfortunately, to such a statement most in our culture today would retort like Pilate: “What is truth?” Well, we better find out or America’s experiment in self-government is doomed.

1 “Under God” will draw the ire of liberals who want to deny the truth that Jefferson said, “[C]an the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever.”
