Marriage is the name societies have given to a special type of relationship between men and women. However, when societies begin to treat marriage as a mere creation of society that it can redefine, then who is to say what can or cannot constitute a marriage?
This pleading, filed by a lawyer in Tennessee, shows the extremes to which definitions can go. The lawyer, representing himself, seeks to join in the complaint brought by homosexual couples to strike down Tennessee’s constitutional and statutory definition of marriage as a relationship between one man and one woman. He has a sexual attraction to inanimate objects (pornography) on his computer and turning the logic of the homosexual plaintiffs back on them, he wants the law to say that his sexual relationship is as real and deserving of recognition as theirs. Sound weird? Get used to it. The new movie, Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, is the story of a man who falls in love with “Samantha,” a “woman” generated on his computer by an advanced operating system, sort of iPhone’s Siri on steroids. It’s a brave new world indeed.
