FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement on Introduction of SB 2566
FRANKLIN, Tenn. (February 14, 2014) – David Fowler, president of The Family Action Council of Tennessee, has issued the following statement regarding the introduction of Senate Bill (SB) 2566 (House Bill 2467) in the General Assembly. SB 2566 is intended to prohibit government from forcing religious organizations and business owners to participate in certain activities in connection with private marriage ceremonies that violate their sincerely held religious beliefs.
Senate Bill 2566 protecting the religious liberty of those whose understanding of the meaning and purpose of marriage is rooted in their religious beliefs comes at a critical time when federal judges are overturning the will of the people and demeaning religious beliefs about marriage that trace back thousands of years. I commend the sponsors of the bill for their foresight and respect for religious belief.
Ironically, the need for the bill is evidenced by the intolerance of those who oppose it. The disrespect for religious liberty and rights of conscious by many who oppose the bill and their effort to push aside the religious liberty in which our nation is rooted is nothing short of a covert “war on religion.”
Opponents are sending the message across the country that those whose religious beliefs are a guide to their conduct are not welcome in Tennessee. Hopefully, passage of the bill will send the message to those living in states that do not respect their religious beliefs about marriage, that Tennessee is a state in which they want to live.
