FACT COMMENDS THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
FOR SUPPORTING SCIENCE TEACHERS
David Fowler, President of the Family Action Council of Tennessee, said today that the members of the General Assembly should be applauded for their support for our state’s public school science teachers by their support for the Teacher Protection Academic Freedom Act, Senate Bill 893/House Bill 368.
“The legislators who voted for this bill, and the sponsors who worked so hard, have witnessed and withstood the attacks of those who fear they will lose control of scientific thought in America. What they have experienced has vindicated their support for our science teachers who cannot but be aware of the animosity and vitriol of those who would come after them if they dared help students think through the evidence offered in support of various scientific theories.
As the Governor rightly noted last week, the bill does not change the science curriculum for the state of Tennessee. But the bill does make it clear that it is not just okay for teachers to help their students develop critical thinking skills in the field of science, but that they should be encouraged to do so and that they can do so without fear of retribution.”
