Our Founding Fathers Would Be Shocked (September 30, 2015)
The recent flap about Muslims and the presidency has been very telling. Article VI of the Constitution says there can be no religious test for someone running for any federal office.
So Muslims can run for President, but that doesn’t mean our Founding Fathers thought we should elect someone in disregard of his or her religious beliefs.
Religious beliefs were clearly important to them, but they didn’t use the Constitution to prohibit us from doing everything that would be against our best interests. They assumed we would be smart enough not to elect those whose religion would require them to work to undermine the clear import of our Constitution and the foundational principles of our social order.
But with our current president doing just that and liberals defending Muslims, maybe we’re not as smart as they had hoped.
