Is God our God, or Government our God? (September 12, 2012)
At last week’s Democratic convention it was said that “the government is the only thing we all belong to.” While probably meant to create a sense of “belonging” among a diverse group, what might our Founding Fathers have thought?
James Madison, the “Father of our Constitution,” once said:
Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governour of the Universe:
And if a member of Civil Society … do it with a saving of his allegiance to the Universal Sovereign.
In other words, there is One to whom we “belong” and to whom we owe an allegiance that transcends even our role as citizens.
Every nation has a God. The question is whether our God will be our Creator or the government our Creator ordained.
