Common Core is not the Main Problem (June 5, 2013)
Common Core curriculum standards have many Tennessee conservatives upset. What we teach our children and who controls curriculum content is important. But there may be something “common” to the many things going on in public education that needs to be debated as well. As the late Dr. Francis Schaeffer said, “The basic problem of the Christian in this country … is that they have seen things in bits and pieces instead of totals.”
The real issue in education is the clash of worldviews that shows up in the different “bits and pieces” of things like common core, evolution, and sex education. For too long John Dewey’s godless view of education has been dominate.
Perhaps the best thing that could come out of the debate over common core is a debate about what worldview should guide education in the coming years.
