Why Be Hopeful in 2016 (January 6, 2016)
After some of what happened last year, it would be easy to be pessimistic about 2016. But hope, not pessimism, has been the hallmark of the Church.
During the persecution Roman Emperor Diocletian, who sought to stamp out Christianity, Saint Athanasius said:
“[W]hile idolatry and everything else that opposes … Christ is daily dwindling … , the Saviour’s teaching is increasing everywhere! [N]ow that the Divine epiphany of the Word of God has taken place, … all parts of the world in every direction are enlightened by His teaching.”
How could such optimism be?
The answer is the King of this world has, indeed, come, which is why we sang in recent weeks, “Joy to the world! The Lord has come! Let earth receive her King!”
And it is on that fact we can place our hope for 2016.
