Vouchers: A Battle to Watch (December 5, 2012)
Just how strong is the teachers union in Tennessee? We may be about to find out.
Last week Governor Haslam’s task force on school vouchers recommended that the state implement a voucher program for low income students.
It’s likely the legislature will try to enact such a program next year, allowing eligible students to attend a private school or even a public school outside of their district.
But education reform in Tennessee has always been strongly opposed by the teachers union and this time will be no different.
With the governor interested in a voucher program, this will be a battle worth watching between the union and the Republican supermajority now in the legislature.
As charter schools are firmly established in Tennessee, the adoption of a voucher program may be the end of the line for opposition by the union to education reform.
