The Cure for Downcast Hearts (December 25, 2014)
A recent poll said that Americans are facing the new year with the most downcast expectations in nearly a quarter-century.
Apparently, we could use a little “joy to the world.”
And that is exactly what the angels trumpeted at Jesus’ birth and what the hymn writer penned in his song by that name. They understood that the cure for being “downcast” was to make room for the Savior.
Americans seem to recognize their need for a “savior” because we’ll “make room” for any Pied Piper politician who will promise us jobs and a good economy. Sadly, we’ve not seemed ready to make room for a real Savior any more than did the innkeepers when Jesus was born.
But perhaps our downcast spirits will lead more to make room for Him now. At least we can make that our prayer this Christmas.
