When Lawlessness Abounds (August 27, 2014)
The lawlessness we’ve seen in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, is at root another kind of lawlessness. Jesus said that when lawlessness abounds, the love of many will grow cold.
Of course, He was not referring to violations of civil law, but to denial of the moral law of God.
When we deny God’s moral law, love must grow cold because every man becomes a law unto himself. And that produces people who care only for themselves. Sadly, many Christians who say God’s love frees us from the law have forgotten that Jesus said loving God and our neighbor was a summation of what it meant to keep the Ten Commandments.
So if we’re to return law and order to our streets, let’s pray the church will lift up the law, not just join the calls for curfews and calm.
