The Times That Try Men’s Souls (April 20, 2016)
The Human Rights Campaign has gathered a gang of out-of-state big business bullies to intimidate Tennessee legislators in an effort to kill the so-called “bathroom bill.” Their threats are causing some to cower.
And it was into a similar situation to encourage George Washington’s dispirited troops that Thomas Paine wrote the famous phrase “these are the times that try men’s souls.”
While that quote is familiar and applicable today, what followed that line in Paine’s pamphlet is also applicable: “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this occasion with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”
Unfortunately, the House Representative sponsoring the bill decided not to ask for a vote on the bill this year. Perhaps the needed courage will be there next year and triumph then will be even sweeter.
